Trump’s STEM Strategic Vision

President Trump has just released a five year strategic vision to increase community access to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in order to propel America to the global forefront of “literacy, innovation, and employment” through collaboration and major federal investments in “Charting A Course For Success: America’s Strategy for STEM Education.”

In an effort to elevate the importance of STEM initiatives and learning, The National Science Technology Council (NSTC), Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), and the Committee on STEM Education (CoSTEM) collaborated on the report to ensure integrated approach to remove barriers.  To foster national collaboration, these committees met with numerous stakeholders to solicit feedback from all 50 States, federal agencies, employers, and tribal communities.  During these meetings, they discussed ways to enhance and engage relations to establish collective educational objective.

The report seeks to fulfill three primary goals to build strong foundations for STEM Literacy, increase diversity, equity and inclusion in STEM, and prepare the STEM workforce for the futures.  There strategies focus on partnerships between education, community, and employers to foster STEM ecosystems that unite across geographic boundaries, subjects, and population.

And the Trump Administration has backed this development by creating a solid foundation for the roll-out of this Federal Plan. Ranging from committee and advisory panel creations; federal STEM, job-training, and apprenticeships prioritization orders; and initiatives with historically black colleges and universities, the administration has begun to target the necessary underpinnings for success.  Furthermore, Trump has worked to ensure funding by signing Strengthening Career and Technical Education Act for the 21st Century Act reauthorizing Perkins technology funds to educational institutions to promote new technology equipment and certifications.

While STEM skills have improved over the past 20 years, other countries such as China and India have attained nearly double the total degrees related to STEM. Accessibility has become a primary issue — as many populations simply do not have the capability to engage in high-quality STEM Learning with rural areas, women and other ethnic groups lacking significant representation. Additionally, despite increased STEM graduates labor shortages continue.

This plan targets the creation of initiatives to overcome setbacks, such as the disparity in wealth, personnel, and material distributions. Other large initiatives include developing prepared students for higher ed., focus on professional development for educators, promoting research on blended online learning practice, and methods for replication. Finally increasing workforce entry in certification programs that do not require 4-year degrees.

To alleviate these crises, Trump has developed this STEM Strategic Vision to increase the budget allocation to promote the three following goals of engaging students, building computational literacy, and increase transparency and accountability.

Engaging Students in converging disciplines – serves to create meaningful and inspirational pathways to promote innovation and entrepreneurship through project-based learning and competitions across disciplines.

Build computational literacy – seeks to empower learners in the utilization of the transformative technology advance of recent times using data and computing to solve problems, expand digital learning for individualized learning, engaging VR and real-time distance learning simulations.

Transparency and accountability – intends to cultivate and engage evidence-based practices and decision making to increase underrepresented groups, metrics for evaluation, open source information on performance, and overall federal implementation and reporting.

With commitments spanning across the federal agency spectrum, this plan will provide increased funding to STEM learning and amplify goals and program outcomes throughout the Nation.
